Between November and December, Main Street Commercial Moving successfully executed a three-phase relocation of the University of Utah’s Esports & Games Department into its new downtown Salt Lake City facility. The project involved high-value gaming systems, critical IT infrastructure, and specialized workstation installations. Through disciplined planning, cross-team coordination, and phased execution, the project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget with zero operational downtime.
Scope of Work
- Disconnecting and reconnecting high-value gaming computers
- Installing new monitor arms across multiple workstations
- Transporting department assets and equipment
- Coordinating a seamless handoff into the new downtown facility
This was a technical, hands-on project with no margin for error. Continuity of operations, equipment protection, and schedule discipline were non-negotiable.
Planning & Coordination
- Conducted multiple site visits across three building locations to fully understand departmental needs, evaluate delicate equipment, analyze access points, review destination layouts, and establish schedule priorities.
- Developed a detailed move plan including a color-coordinated labeling system to ensure accurate placement at destination and the creation of efficient, safe walkways for movers.
- Prepared a detailed, itemized quote aligning labor, equipment, and technical resources to the services required to maintain operations and adhere to a strict schedule.
- Held multiple coordination meetings with the Games team to clearly define roles, align expectations, and make real-time adjustments throughout the project as priorities evolved.
- Internally conducted multiple operations meetings to dynamically scale resources up or down as needed, ensuring the project stayed on schedule and on budget.
Execution Strategy: Three-Phase Approach
- Phase 1 — Non-Essential Equipment & Surplus Item Move: Move Team removed and relocated non-critical equipment and surplus items to prepare the space for IT-critical phases.
- Phase 2 — Critical IT Move & Monitor Arm Assembly: IT Team handled the relocation of critical systems and assembled and installed new monitor arms across workstations.
- Phase 3 — IT Disconnect & Reconnect / Final Equipment Move: IT Team and Move Team completed final disconnects, transport, and reconnections.
Results
- Project completed ahead of schedule
- Project delivered under budget
- Zero equipment damage
- No operational downtime for the department
- Fully functional workstations and gaming systems upon turnover
At the end of the day, this outcome was a direct result of disciplined planning, proactive coordination, and decades of experience executing complex, high-value relocations.
